I wanted to make sure you had accurate information on this morning’s fire on UBC Peninsula. This information may be of particular interest to Electoral Area residents living in the UBC/UEL areas.
On the morning of June 29, an approximately 150 square metre fire broke out on steep and difficult terrain within Pacific Spirit Regional Park, near the top of Trail 5 between the Museum of Anthropology and Wreck Beach. Thanks to the combined efforts of responders including Vancouver Fire Department, Metro Vancouver and BC Wildfire Service, the fire was contained and put down by 11:00 am.
This incident is a good reminder of how careful we each need to be in these hot, dry months. Please be vigilant when outdoors, especially when in the forest. If you notice a fire, report it to 9-1-1. Smoking is prohibited in all Metro Vancouver regional parks and greenways, except in designated smoking areas. Check the Pacific Spirit Regional Park webpage frequently for the latest fire rating information and for current restrictions on outdoor cooking appliances.
Also, be aware that a campfire ban is expected to be put in place across the Province starting at noon tomorrow (June 30). You can follow the latest fire restrictions in BC here. This is also a good time to check that you and your loved ones are prepared for any emergency – click here to learn about the three steps to preparedness.
Stay safe out there!
